  • Description

Three bomb explosions in Phnom Penh on Sunday (19 August) killed at least nine people. More than 40 others are reported to have been injured in the blasts, two of which occurred in cinemas.

The first explosion was at a Military Police post in the centre of a busy market area. At first, it was thought to have been the result of a plastic bomb, but later investigations by Military Police indicate that the explosion was caused by hand grenades thrown inside the post. One person was killed and five others were injured in this incident.

The two cinema explosions occurred at an interval of fifteen minutes on Sunday afternoon. The cinemas were less than a mile (2 kilometres) away from each other.

Some observers have speculated that the series of explosions might be the start of a communist-led insurgent campaign in the city after a week of relative inactivity on the part of the anti-government forces. However, Phnom Penh has remained fairly quiet since the three explosions.
