    Maro Denahue, driving a McLaren, swept into the lead 30 mile s(48kms) from home to win the Indianapolis 500 mater racing classic on Saturday (May 27), shattering the average speed record set a year age by Al Unser.

    Denahus, 35, covered the 200 laps at an average speed of 163.5 miles-an hour (263.1kph). Al Unser, who finished third, set the record last year at 157.7 miles-an-hour (253.5 kph).

    Denahue's dark -blue McLaren went tint to he lead 13 laps from the and of the race when Jerry Grant, the dark-horse team-mate of Bobby Unser, seemed certain of a surprise triumph.

    Only 45 seconds behind Donahue, Grant was forced into the pits after his picked up a three-inch piece of metal on the track. During the vital 38 seconds Grant spent in the pits, Donahue shot into the lead for the first time.

    Grart finished second, with Al Unser-- who the event in 1970 and 1971 -- in third place.

    There were no serious accidents in the race, watched by some 300,000 fans, although Mike Mosley of Clarement, Indiana, lost a wheel as he came into the home stretch in the 57th lap
    His car bounced off the outside wall twice and then burst into flames. Mosley was pulled away from the wreck with his clothes still smouldering and taken to hospital for treatment of second and third-degree burns on his feet and ankles. He also suffered minor facial burns but was reported later to be in satisfactory condition.
