  • Description

Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike-the world's first woman Prime Minister in 1960-yesterday (Thursday) swept back into power in Ceylon. Her left-wing United Front coalition recorded a crushing victory over the ruling United National Party of outgoing Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake.

Mrs Bandaranaike's own Sri Lanka National Freedom Party won 90 of the 151 seats in the House of Representatives. Her coalition partners, a Trotskyite Party and a pro-Moscow Communist party, accounted for another 25 seats.

All but six of Mr. Senanayake's 17 ministers suffered election defeat as his party slumped 71 seats to a mere 17.

Hot on the heels of this major election upset, violence erupted in Ceylon. A policeman was killed during riots in Mr. Senanayake's constituency when a mob attacked right-wing newspaper offices.

The new coalition government is expected to turn Ceylon into a republic with a president as head of state-this severing the country's traditional allegiance to the British crown.
