Background: ROODEPORT, NEAR JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Five Policemen were injured when a bomb exploded at the police administration headquarters at Roodeport on the outskirts of Johannesburg on August 16. The explosion occurred on the third floor of the building and caused a fire which took more than an hour to extinguish. Among those injured was Colonel B.J. Van Den Berg, District Commandant for the eastern area of Soweto, the large black township ten kilometres south of Roodeport. No individual or group has as yet claimed responsibility for the explosion. Police stations and government offices have been frequent targets of sabotage, allegedly by the banned African National Congress (ANC). South African Minister for Law and Order Louis Le Grange told reporters after the blast that the government felt the "ANC could have been responsible."
