    FROG'S LEGS, (NOT THE SUCCULENT FRENCH TYPE) TOOK PRIDE OF PLACE IN NEW SOUTH WALES LAST WEEK. AT THE SMALL TOWN OF GOULBURN THE MOST AGILE OF THE LOCAL FROGS TOOK PART IN A JUMPING CONTEST - THE FIRST EVER HELD IN AUSTRALIA.

    THESE FROG-JUMPING CONTESTS ARE NOT NEW; ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS STORIES TOLD BY MARK TWAIN CENTRES AROUND SUCH A CONTEST ABOUT 90 YEARS AGO. THAT CONTEST IS STILL HELD TODAY.

    THE CONTEST BEGAN AFTER AN INVITATION FOR AN AUSTRALIAN FROG FROM THE ORGANISERS OF MARK TWAIN'S FROG JUMPING CONTEST IN FROGTOWN, 137 MILES FROM SAN FRANCISCO.

    YOU HAVE TO STARTLE A FROG INTO JUMPING BY BLOWING HARD AT IT. THE WINNING FROG IN THIS CONTEST COVERED FOUR FEET, NINE INCHES IN A SINGLE LEAP.

    PETER NORQUAY, THE FROG'S OWNER, WAS AWARDED THE CONTEST SASH. HIS FROG, NAMED LES, MIGHT BE LUCKY ENOUGH TO REPRESENT AUSTRALIA, BUT HE'LL HAVE TO IMPROVE ON HIS LEAP OF FOUR FEET NINE INCHES. THE WORLD RECORD SINGLE LEAP BY A STARTLED FROG IS 17 FEET 1 INCH.
