  • Description

In Calcutta, final preparations for the 33rd World Table Tennis Championships were continuing on the eve of the contest's opening.

Workmen were still putting the final touches to the huge new stadium -- built specially for the championships -- on Tuesday (4 February) the day before the official opening by Indian President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed.

Teams from some of the more than 60 countries taking part spent the days before the opening games (on Thursday) practicing while the workmen laboured around them.

Another noticeable feature was the number of police and security men near the stadium. Everyone entering it was searched.

The precautions are believed t stem for an Indian decision to ban an Israeli team from entering the country. They applied a similar ruling to South Africa.

And a short time before the competitions began the International Table Tennis federation agreed to allow a Palestinian team (Gaza) to take part and become a fully-fledged member of the ITTF.

A Chinese team -- which includes both the men's and women's world champions -- is also in Calcutta. It is the first Chinese delegation to visit India since the Sino-Indian war of 1962.
