    The African Development Bank granted loans on Wednesday (21 January) to the governments of Zaire and he Congo at its headquarters in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast.

    Acting President of the A.D.B. Mr. Salem Mohamed Omeish signed the agreements with Zaire's Ambassador to Ivory coast, Tangala Amisi, and Minister Designate to the Popular Republic of the Congo, Makaya Etienne.

    Zaire was granted a loan of four million U.S. dollars (two million pounds sterling) to help finance the foreign exchange cost of a water project in Kananga, the western Kasai regional capital.

    The project comprises the construction of new water production and distribution facilities and is regarded as atop priority by the Government of Zaire which aims to meet the water requirement of the region up to 1985.

    Congo was granted a loan of two million U.S. Dollars (one million pounds sterling) for the financing of telecommunications links between Brazzaville, the capital, and Impfondo.

    The project, the first phase of a telecommunications development programme, will provide the area north of Brazzaville with modern telecommunications links. It will also establish a permanent traffic between the four chief towns in the country and capital, and link Brazzaville to N'Djamena in Chad through Bangui in the Central African Republic as part of the Pan-African Telecommunications Network.

    SYNOPSIS: At the African development Bank's headquarters in Abidjan on Wednesday loans were granted to Zaire and the Congo. Acting President of the A.D.B. Mr. Salem Omeish signed the first agreement in Ivory Coast with Minister Designate to the Congo, Makaya Etienne. The loan of two million U.S. dollars was to help finance telecommunications links in the north of the Congo. It will also provide a link with the Pan-African Telecommunications Network.

    The second agreement with Zaire was for four million U.S. dollars to help finance a water project in the Western Kasia regional capital Kanaga. The agreement was signed with Mr. Tangala Amisi, Zaire's ambassador to Ivory Coast.

    The project comprises the construction of new water production and distribution facilities. The Government is treating the project as high priority and aims to meet the water requirements of the area for another ten years.
