  • Description

In Maine...for the second day running...welfare workers distributed surplus food to unemployed workers in the Saco-Biddeford area. Nearly one third of the labour force in this textile area is unemployed.

The Saco-Biddeford area has been in a steady slump. When the Bates Textile plant closed last year, it threw twelve hundred out of work. The Pepperell Company laid off four hundred last week....the rest are now working a reduced week. Four hundred have been furloughed at the Saco-Lowell Shops in Saco as part of a twenty per cent reduction in the labour force. The plant is still on a 5-day week....but anxiously seeking diversification. On Saturday, six tons of Government surplus food, including powdered milk, rice, flour, cheese, were brought in. The two cities, with a joint population of some 30,000, had more than three thousand unemployed. Although the New England textile industry has been ailing for some time, them situation has become critical.

Yesterday at Biddeford City Hall, a crowd of nearly 500 persons lined up to receive the food. Most of them were women....some with children. Business men in nearby Portland, who had wired President Eisenhower asking defence work for the area, also contributed fresh milk and other food supplies for the unemployed in the Saco-Biddeford area. The Government surplus food gave a family of three two pounds of rice, two of cheese, two of dry beans. The other contributions enabled each family to receive one quart of fresh milk. Today more unemployed families appeared for food. Although not all the applicants were on the relief rolls, all were jobless. Anybody unemployed is eligible.
