  • Description

French President Georges Pompidou was on a five-day tour of two African countries last week to try to cement Franco-African relations.

On Thursday(23 November) the French President spoke to the Togo People's Assembly. He praised General Etienne Eyadema, the Togoless Head of State, as "a friend of France" and paid tribute to his efforts to unite the country. President Pompidou promised increased French aid to the West African State. He emphasised, as he had during his visit to Upper volta, that French aid in Africa must give priority to agriculture.

One critical aspect of the discussions is the demand by the African countries for a revaluation of the French African community franc which is supported by the Bank of France.

President Pompidou's African tour was his third trip to French-speaking African States since he was elected to the Presidency in March 1969.

SYNOPSIS: At the National Assembly building in Lome, Togo Thursday, native dancers performed to welcome a visiting head of state.

French President Georges Pompidou was escorted by President Etienne Eyadema on the visit to the Togo People's Assembly. The French leader was visiting Togo as part of a five-day tour of two African countries.

Before coming to Togo, President Pompidou spent several days conferring with leaders in Upper Volta. The French leader's trip is an attempt to cement Franco-African relations.

At the Assembly session, the French President praised General Eyadema as "a friend of France" and paid tribute to his efforts to unite the country. He also promised increased French aid to the West African State -- with priority for this aid to go to agriculture.

President Pompidou was warmly received wherever he went in the Togolese capital. Crowds lined his route, and entertainers were stationed along the way to give a break in the formalities....But underlying the cordiality of his trip were some critical issues. Members of the French-speaking African community are urging a change in the areas monetary unit -- the franc -- which is supported by the Bank of France. The African countries want a more favourable rate of exchange with the French franc...The French President returned to Paris on Saturday.
