  • Description

Senegal's President Leopold Senghor made a brief visit to Paris, France, on Tuesday (19 October) for talks with French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing.

SYNOPSIS: The two leaders met at the Elysee Palace. Part of their discussions touched on the Rhodesian conference to be held in Geneva this week. President Senghor later told newsmen that Britain and the Unites States should be given every encouragement in their efforts to solve the problem He also called on the Africa liberation movements involved in the talks to concentrate on what could unit them and not what would divide them. Overall, the President said, he was optimistic about the Rhodesian situation. However, he said he wasn't so happy about the success of the so-called north-south dialogue that reconvened in the French capital this week. The main purpose of the talks is to try to bring about an economic balance between industrialised and developing countries. But President Senghor believes the gap between rich and poor nations is widening so fast that despite the worthy efforts of the dialogue, he fears it is doomed to failure.
