  • Description

PAKISTAN IS FACED WITH SPECIAL PROBLEMS BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT THE COUNTRY IS DIVIDED INTO TWO COMPLETELY SEPARATE PROVINCES, LYING OVER A THOUSAND MILES APART ON EITHER SIDE OF INDIA. PAKISTAN IS GEOGRAPHICALLY SMALLER, BUT HAS THE LARGER POPULATION: 61-MILLION COMPARED TO 51 ????-MILLION IN THE WEST. UNTIL NOW THE EASTERN PROVINCE HAS LAGGED BEHIND THE WEST IN ECONOMIC PROSPERITY - A MATTER OF SOME COMPLAINT AMONG POLITICIANS IN THE EAST. ONE OF THE OBJECTS OF THE PAKISTAN GOVERNMENT'S CURRENT FIVE-YEAR PLAN IS TO CUT DOWN THE DISCREPANCY AND BRING THE EASTERN PROVINCE UP TO THE SAME LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT AS THE WEST.

THIS FILM WAS SHOT IN AND AROUND EAST PAKISTAN'S TWO PRINCIPAL CITIES: THE CAPITAL, DACCA, AND THE CHIEF PORT, CHITTAGONG. IT SHOWS SOMETHING OF THE LIFE OF THE OLD CITY OF DACCA, ON THE BANKS OF ONE OF THE BRANCHES OF THE BRAHMAPUTRA RIVER, AND OF THE MASSIVE NEW BUILDINGS THAT GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS, BANKS AND PRIVATE FIRMS ARE NOW PUTTING UP THERE AS COMMERCE AND INDUSTRIALISATION INCREASE.

IN CHITTAGONG, IT BEGINS WITH THE PORT: A PORT THAT HAS INCREASED IN IMPORTANCE SINCE THE PARTITION OF INDIA AND PAKISTAN, AND CAN NOW HANDLE FOUR TIMES AS MUCH SHIPPING AS IT COULD TWENTY YEARS AGO. MORE THAN TWO MILLION TONS OF EAST PAKISTAN'S EXPORTS AND IMPORTS PASS THROUGH IT EVERY YEAR.

ABOUT 30 MILES (48 KMS) UP THE KARNAPHULI RIVER FROM CHITTAGONG IS ONE OF THE LARGEST PAPER MILLS IN ASIA. IT WAS SITED THERE, AFTER CONSULTATION WITH SWEDISH AND CANADIAN EXPERTS, TO MAKE USE OF THE ALMOST UNLIMITED SUPPLY OF BAMBOO IN THE SURROUNDING HILLS FOR RAW MATERIAL. AT THE TIME OF PARTITION, PAKISTAN HAD NO PAPER INDUSTRY AND WAS FACED WITH HAVING NO IMPORT ALL ITS NEEDS. NOW IT IS SELF-SUFFICIENT. MORE RECENTLY, THE SAME COMPANY THAT OWNS THE PAPER MILL HAS BUILT A RATON ??? ALONGSIDE, ALSO USING BAMBOO AS ITS BASIC RAW MATERIAL.

FILMS ENDS WITH ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT NOW TAKING PLACE IN EAST PAKISTAN: THE CHITTAGONG STEEL WORKS, THE FIRST IN PAKISTAN, WHICH WERE OPENED LAST YEAR BY PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN.

THERE IS NATURAL OR EFFECTS SOUND THROUGHOUT.
