  • Description

At a ceremony outside Lome, the capital of Togo, on Wednesday (1 March) President Etienne Eyadema took delivery of a fleet of heavy-duty tractors, lorries and earth moving machines. It was the second shipment delivered to Togo in little more than a year.

SYNOPSIS: The ceremony marking the hand-over of the equipment underlines the importance the Government accords to development projects within the country. One Government spokesmen said the new machinery would play its part in the "green revolution" -- the development of the country's agricultural potential.

President Eyadema and leading members of the ruling part -- the Togolese People's Rally -- attended the ceremony. Since the President came to power nearly eleven years ago, a programme for the development of the rural areas has been a cornerstone of the Government's planning, and one of the biggest areas of investment.

The President emphasised his concern in this field by trying one of the heavy machines himself. Some of the equipment is to be used in civil engineering projects already under way, including the construction of a north-south highway network which will play an important role in unifying the country.

It will also enable products from the north to reach the port of Lome.

In the agricultural field recent changes are expected to increase the land under cultivation in a country where agriculture is the main livelihood for 80 percent of the population. It is in this programme that these new machines will play a vital part.
