  • Description

SICILIANS WENT TO THE POLLS ON SUNDAY TO ELECT A NEW 90-SEAT PARLIAMENT OF THE SEMI-AUTONOMOUS ISLAND OFF THE SOUTHERN TIP OF ITALY.THE ELECTORS TOTAL NEARLY THREE MILLION IN THE ISLAND'S NINE PROVINCES AND BY THE END OF POLLING DAY, WITH STATIONS STAYING OPEN FOR 14 HOURS, MORE THAN 81 PER CENT HAD VOTED.

MAIN INTEREST TO POLITICAL OBSERVERS WAS WHETHER THE ELECTION WOULD SHOW ANY CHANGES IN PARTY STRENGTHS COMPARED WITH ITALY'S NATIONAL PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION SIX WEEKS AGO, WHEN THE CHRISTIAN-DEMOCRAT MAJORITY PARTY LOST SOME 700,000 VOTES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY AND THE COMMUNISTS GAINED ABOUT ONE MILLION.

WHEN VOTE-COUNTING FINISHED YESTERDAY (MONDAY) CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS MAINTAINED THEIR POSITION AS THE LARGEST SINGLE PARTY AND HAD A 3.45 PER CENT GAIN OVER THEIR SHARE OF THE VOTES IN 1959, WHILE THEIR NUMBER OF SEATS ROSE FROM 34 TO 37.THE COMMUNIST VOTE ROSE BY 2.2 PER CENT AND GAINED THEM AN EXTRA SEAT.THEY REMAIN THE SECOND LARGEST PARTY WITH 22 SEATS.
