Ninety-seven policemen and five demonstrators were reported injured. Police arrested nearly 300 demonstrators during the two hour battle.

    The clashes followed a rally by more than 14,000 students and workers protesting the signing of the Okinawa agreement. Rally speakers said they would use force to prevent the signing, expected in Paris this month. The demonstrators are against the agreement, because it would enable the United States to maintain military bases on the island . Hurling stones and petrol bombs, the protestors staged one of the most violent demonstrations in Tokyo in recent months.

Retaliating with petrol bombs and rocks, the protestors staged one of the most violent demonstrations in Tokyo in recent mouths. Ninety-seven policemen and five demonstrators were reported injured during the two hour battle. Police arrested nearly three-hundred of the demonstrators.

    The clashes continued as night fell, with police moving with batons, shields, tear gas, and water cannon. The demonstrators hit back with bamboo poles and stones. Some overturned cars, setting afire to some with petrol bombs. Leaders of the demonstration had threatened to use force to prevent the signing of the agreement -- expected some time this month in Paris.
