  • Description

Three bombs shattered a main suburban police station in the Cyprus capital, Nicosia in the early hours of Sunday morning (July 29).

It was a night of more than 20 bombs in Nicosia and other towns and villages as the offensive by former EOKA guerrilla leader General George Grivas against the Government of President Makarios becomes more bitter.

The bombs in the Larnaca Road police station were placed by Grivas men who warned police by telephone to leave the building.

Police found one bomb and carried it outside. But the other two exploded starting a fire which detonated the third bomb.

Other bombs exploded at a Nicosia filling station, a Limassol grain store and badly damaged many cars in Larnaca and nearby villages.

During the night police arrested 21 people. Among them were two policemen detained in connection with the Nicosia police station blast. Observers say the disturbances in the Greek Cypriot Community are likely to cause a postponement of the inter-community talks due to resume on Tuesday.
