    PRESIDENT OBOTE OF UGANDA YESTERDAY (MONDAY) COMMISSIONED THE SECOND VESSEL OF THE EAST AFRICAN NATIONAL SHIPPING LINE, THE 10-THOUSAND TON S.S. UGANDA.

    THE CEREMONY TOOK PLACE BEFORE AN AUDIENCE WHICH INCLUDED 13 LEADERS OF OTHER AFRICAN STATES, INCLUDING PRESIDENT NYERERE OF TANZANIA.

    REPRESENTATIVES OF THE OTHER COUNTRIES PARTICIPATING IN THE SHIPPING LINE - PRESIDENT NYERERE, PRESIDENT KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA, AND VICE-PRESIDENT MOI, OF KENYA - TOOK THE SALUTE WITH PRESIDENT OBOTE AT THE CEREMONY.

    IN HIS COMMISSIONING SPEECH PRESIDENT OBOTE SPOKE OF THE EAST AFRICAN NATIONAL SHIPPING LINE BRINGING LANDLOCKED UGANDA TO THE SHORES OF THE INDIAN OCEAN.

    THE LINE WAS FORMED IN 1966, USING CHARTERED VESSELS. ITS FIRST SHIP WAS COMMISSIONED IN FEBRUARY LAST YEAR, AND OPERATES BETWEEN AFRICAN AND EUROPEAN PORTS.

    IRONICALLY THE UGANDA, REGISTERED AT THE PORT OF JINJA, ON LAKE VICTORIA, WILL NEVER VISIT ITS HOME PORT BECAUSE JINJA LIES 3,700 FEET (916 METRES) ABOVE SEA LEVEL.
