  • Description

While 25,000 Turkish troops and police searched for his killers, the body of Israeli Consul General Ephraim Elrom was flown back to Israel on Sunday night (23 May). Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban helped the 58-year-old Consul's widow from the aircraft as the coffin was carried to a police command car in Tel Aviv.

Earlier, in Istanbul, military police placed the coffin, draped in the Israeli national colours, aboard a special Turkish Air Force plane. In their hunt for the Consul's killer's Turkish forces have detained several suspects, but a tight curfew and house-to-house search continues.

The Consul General was found shot on Sunday, six days after his abduction. He was buried with full military honours in a Tel Aviv cemetery on Monday.
