  • Description

British Royal Air Force Beverley transport planes have recently been flying urgently needed food and medical supplies from Bangkok, Thailand, to the Laotian capital of Vientiane - devastated after the violent battle between troops of Communist Captain Kong Lae and pro-Western forces of General Phoumi Nosavan.

The Governments of Thailand, South Vietnam and Taiwan have all sent supplies of food and other necessities. Medical personnel have also been flown to the area.

After unloading supplies in Vientiane, the Beverley aircraft have taken hundreds of refugees - mainly French and American families - to the safety of Bangkok.

Soviet planes are said to have dropped at least two regiments of North Vietnamese troops to aid the forces of General Kong Lae. General Lae - supported by Pathet Lao guerillas - was reported to be harassing General Phoumi's soldiers in the Vientiane area in preparation for a counter-attack.
