Background: In Siberia, which is fast becoming a major centre of the Soviet Union's natural resources, vast deposits of oil are being pumped to the surface by new oil wells.

One of the men most responsible for opening up the new oilfield, Hero of Socialist Labour Farman Salmanov, has been awarded the Lenin Prize for his pioneer work.

Mr. Salmanov, who has devoted his life to the search for oil and gas deposits, was one of the first discoverers of the rich resources of Western Siberia.

Oil production in West Siberia is likely to reach 120 million tons within the next five years, and is expected to have redoubled by 1980.
