  • Description

THE MANAGER OF ABIDJAN ZOO, IN THE IVORY COAST, CLAIMS TO HAVE THE SMALLEST ELEPHANT IN THE WORLD. ONLY A FEW DAYS OLD, THE ELEPHANT STANDS A FRACTION UNDER 27 INCHES (0.68 M).

THE ZOO MANAGER, MR CHOLLEY, BELIEVES THE BABY IS A YOUNG PIGMY ELEPHANT. HE SAYS THAT MOST ZOOLOGISTS DO NOT BELIEVE PIGMY ELEPHANTS EXIST. HOWEVER, MR CHOLLEY SAYS THERE IS SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO BELIEVE THEY DO EXIST.

HE SAYS THE 27-INCH HIGH BABY IS THE SMALLEST ELEPHANT EVER CAPTURED.

MR CHOLLEY AND HIS STAFF ARE DOING ALL THEY CAN TO LOOK AFTER THE BABY BUT HE SAYS THERE IS ONLY ONE CHANCE IN A THOUSAND THAT IT WILL SURVIVE.

THE BABY IS BELIEVED TO BE ONLY 10 TO 15 DAYS OLD. HUNTERS SHOOTING A HERD THAT WAS DAMAGING PALM-OIL PLANTATIONS NEAR ABIDJAN, KILLED THE BABY'S MOTHER. THE HUNTERS SAID THE MOTHER WAS ONLY ABOUT SIX FEET HIGH, (1.8 METRES) WHEREAS THE NORMAL FEMALE AFRICAN ELEPHANT STANDS ABOUT NINE FEET (2.7 M) HIGH.

CITING OTHER EVIDENCE THAT PIGMY ELEPHANTS EXIST, MR CHOLLEY SAYS AN ELEPHANT BROUGHT TO THE ZOO RECENTLY MEASURED ONLY 42 INCHES (1.05 M) HIGH BUT PROVED TO BE ABOUT TWO YEARS OLD.

DESPITE HIS DELICACY THE BABY EACH DAY EATS ABOUT FOUR AND A HALF POUNDS (TWO KILOS) OF MASH - MADE UP OF CARROTS, POWDERED LEAVES AND POWDERED MILK -- MORE THAN HALF A GALLON (THREE LITRES) OF CARROT SOUP AND ALMOST HALF A GALLON (TWO LITRES) OF COCONUT MILK.
