  • Description

Paris' famous Jardin Des Plantes zoo has been closed because of the sudden death of a few of its animals.

Two horses and a few other animals died recently and its is thought they were suffering from a disease named melioidose which is spread by the Whitemore bacillus.

It is too early to talk of an epidemic, but the zoo was closed because it is not known what the effects of the disease will be on either animals or humans. It's not normally found in cooler climates and it is thought humans may contract it through open wounds.

The disease is known in Tropical Africa, but it is the first time it has been seen in France. Numerous tests are underway to ascertain which part of the grounds are already affected.

SYNOPSIS: The famous Jardin Des Plantes zoo in Paris has been closed because of a disease which has killed a few of the park's animals. Two horses and a few other animals died suddenly form a disease which was previously unknown in France.

It is thought the disease they contracted was named Melioidose, which is transmitted by the Whitemore bacillus. It is common in parts of tropical Africa, but is extremely rare in the cooler climates. Its effects on humans are uncertain, but it is thought that the bacteria lives in the earth and could be contracted through open wounds.

There's no talks of an epidemic at this stage because, so far, only five of the zoos thirteen-hundred animals have been affected. But the various animals have been separated and numerous tests are being carried out to establish where the disease came from. The Pasteur Institute is also conducting tests to find out which parts of the zoo grounds are infected.

Meanwhile, the animals are allowed some peace and quiet, away form the public eye for a shot time. But they are used to being watched by scientists ... the zoo is used extensively for animal observation by nearby universities.
