    GHANA'S NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL CHAIRMAN, GENERAL JOSEPH ANKRAH, HAS CALLED FOR THE RAPID REMOVAL OF TRADE BARRIERS BETWEEN AFRICAN COUNTRIES. GENERAL ANKRAH MADE THE CALL ON THURSDAY, WHEN HE WAS OPENING THE WEST AFRICAN SUB-REGIONAL ECONOMIC CONFERENCE IN ACCRA.

    REPRESENTATIVES FROM 12 WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES ATTENDED THE MEETING, WHICH LAST FOR SEVEN DAYS. THEY CAME FROM DAHOMEY, GHANA, IVORY COAST, LIBERIA, MALI, MAURITANIA, NIGER, NIGERIA, SENEGAL, SIERRA LEONE, TOGO AND UPPER VOLTA. GUINEA AND GAMBIA WERE NOT REPRESENTED.

    IN LATER BUSINESS THE CONFERENCE DECIDED TO FORM A REGIONAL ECONOMIC COMMUNITY, THE DETAILS OF WHICH ARE YET TO BE DISCUSSED.

    IN HIS OPENING REMARKS GENERAL ANKRAH STRESSED THE NEED FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AMONG THE COUNTRIES. APART FROM BEING AN ECONOMIC NECESSITY, IT WOULD ALSO BE "POLITICALLY WISE."
