    Background: WORK ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF A 255-THOUSAND TON OIL TANKER AT THE VEROLME SHIPYARD, ROTTERDAM, IS CONTINUING. THE KEEL OF THE GIANT TANKER WAS LAID YESTERDAY.

    THE TANKER, BEING BUILT FOR THE ESSO OIL COMPANY, WILL BE THE BIGGEST EVER COMPLETED ON A SLIPWAY. A HUGE 300 FOOT HIGH (90 METRES) CRANE, CAPABLE OF LIFTING A WEIGHT OF 800 TONS, IS ALSO BEING BUILT. THE COMPLETED SLIPWAY, WHICH WILL BE FINISHED IN AUGUST, WILL BE THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD. IT WILL BE ABLE TO HANDLE SHIPS OF UP TO 400-THOUSAND TONS. THE DIRECTOR OF THE SHIPYARD, MR. VEROLME, ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT THE YARD HAS STARTED WORK ON A DRYDOCK WHICH WILL ALSO BE THE BIGGEST IN THE WORLD. IT WILL BE COMPLETED IN 15 MONTHS AND WILL BE 1-THOUSAND 800 FEET LONG (600 METRES).
