    TAKING THE SALUTE AT THE CEREMONY WAS GENERAL JOSEF KAMMHUBER, INSPECTOR GENERAL OF THE WEST GERMAN AIR FORCE; WITH U.S. GENERAL LANDON, CHIEF OF THE 4TH ALLIED TACTICAL AIR FORCE AND COMMANDER OF THE 17TH U.S. AIR FORCE; AND GENERAL TRAUTLOFT, COMMANDER OF THE WEST GERMAN AIR FORCE'S SOUTHERN AIR DIVISION.

    AFTER THE INSPECTION AND MARCH PAST, THE FIGHTERS FLEW LOW OVER THE FIELD IN A SERIES OF DEMONSTRATION RUNS. THIS UNIT - NO. 53 RECONNAISSANCE WING - CONSISTS OF 36 FIATS G-91 FIGHTERS WHICH ARE DESIGNED IN ITALY, BUILT UNDER LICENCE IN GERMANY AND POWERED BY BRITISH ENGINES. CAPABLE OF 600 M.P.H. AT VERY LOW LEVELS, THE G-91 IS DESIGNED TO FLY UNDERNEATH ENEMY RADAR FIELDS AND AT TOO HIGH A SPEED FOR ANTI-AIRCRAFT BATTERIES. IT IS ALREADY IN SERVICE WITH THE ITALIAN AIR FORCE.

    NATO PLANNING CALLS FOR AN ULTIMATE WEST GERMAN AIR STRENGTH OF 20 SQUADRONS, OF BOTH FIGHTERS AND BOMBERS.
