Background: Members and representatives of the Federal Republic of West Germany, along with members of the press, have been accorded an opportunity to visit a Nike Ajax Guided Missile site in Landau.--this was on 28th. April.
Colonel William Massello Jr., Commanding Officer of the 32d. Artillery Brigade is acting as host on this special occasion. A briefing and demonstrations of the equipment and a tour were conducted through the Fire Control and Launcher Control areas. Captain Carl A. Leishman, Battery Commander, Battery B, 95th. Missile Battalion, (NIKE) has the overall supervision for the visit to this site. Lt. Col. Edward Strongin is the Commanding Officer of the 95th. Missile Battalion, (NIKE).
Approximately fifty people were in the visiting party. There were military and political representative from the Bundestag Defence Committee and members of the staff of the American Embassy in Bonn.
Prominent among the guests was Dr. Richard Jaeger, chairman of the Bundestag Committee.
The visitors saw various types of rockets and the outstanding feature was the 'conveyor-belt' launching ramp. Rockets are carried from the storage hangars on their ramps, in a horizontal plane. To prepare them for firing mechanism in the ramps elevates them to the launching angle.
