  • Description

A fire which broke out on an offshore oil drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday (16 October) was still burning out of control on Monday (18 October).

A two-mile-long oil slick was reported to be spreading into the Gulf, and a thin film of oil was reported by the United States Coast Guard more than 20 miles from the rig.

The platform's three-man crew escaped soon after the fire started, and a spokesman for the Amoco Production Company, who own the platform, has estimated that it will take as long as 45 days and approximately 10 million dollars (U.S.) to drill relief wells in the Gulf floor so the oil supply, which is feeding the fire, can be cut off.
