    THE OIL RIG SEA QUEST, BLOWN OFF STATION BY GALES IN THE NORTH SEA EARLY LAST MONTH, WAS BROUGHT INTO ROTTERDAM LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY) FOR REPAIRS.

    THE BRITISH PETROLEUM OWNED RIG ARRIVED OFF EUROPOORT, THE ENTRANCE OF THE 25-MILE (40 KMS) ROTTERDAM WATERWAY, ON THURSDAY (29 FEB) TOWED BY THREE SEA-GOING TUGS.

    PORT AUTHORITIES DECIDED TO MAKE THE FINAL STAGE OF THE JOURNEY DURING SATURDAY NIGHT IN AN EFFORT TO AVOID CONGESTION ON THE WATERWAY WHICH BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF THE RIG HAD TO BE CLOSED TO OTHER SHIPPING.

    SIX TUGS WERE USED IN THE OPERATION WHICH TOOK ELEVEN HOURS TO COMPLETE.

    SEA QUEST WAS DRILLING A TEST WELL 100 MILES (160 KMS) OFF THE ENGLISH COAST WHEN GALE-FORCE WINDS BROKE FREE ITS ANCHOR CHAINS. SINCE THEN ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO SEAL OFF THE WELL WHICH LATER BEGAN TO LEAK.
