    A SAMPLE OF MOON ROCK FROM APOLLO-11 LUNAR MISSION WAS ON SHOW LAST WEEK FOR PUBLIC VIEWING AT THE NATIONAL SCIENCE MUSEUM IN ACCRA. THE ROCK SAMPLE WENT ON DISPLAY LAST THURSDAY (22 JANUARY) AFTER A PRIVATE SHOW FOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS THE EVENING BEFORE AT THE OLD STATE HOUSE.

    THE WALNUT-SIZED ROCK IS ESTIMATED BY SCIENTISTS TO BE ABOUT 3,600 MILLION YEARS OLD. THE SAMPLE WAS CHIPPED OFF A LARGE PIECE OF LUNAR ROCK TAKEN BACK TO EARTH BY THE CREW OF APOLLO-11 LAST JULY. IT WEIGHTS ABOUT TWO-THIRDS OF AN OUNCE (APPROX. 16.5 GRAMMES).

    THE PREVIOUS EVENING, THE DAY THE SAMPLE ARRIVED IN GHANA, A SPECIAL VIEWING WAS PRESENTED FOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS. CABINET MINISTERS, MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT, DIPLOMATS AND OTHERS ATTENDED THE SESSION.

    INFORMATION ABOUT THE SAMPLE WAS PROVIDED BY MR. DELL HOOD, THE AMERICAN OFFICIAL ESCORTING THE SAMPLE DURING ITS AFRICAN TOUR, AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES INFORMATION SERVICE IN GHANA.

    THE SAMPLE WHICH MOVES ON THIS WEEK TO KUMASI, IN CENTRAL GHANA, WILL ALSO BE DISPLAYED IN TOGO, THE IVORY COAST, CAMEROUN AND LIBERIA. U.S. OFFICIALS SAID ON SUNDAY (25 JANUARY) THAT AN ESTIMATED 45,000 GHANIANS HAD SO FAR VIEWED THE LUNAR ROCK SAMPLE.
