  • Description

Six national leaders -- two Presidents and four Prime Ministers -- began a two-day conference in Salzburg, Austria, on Monday (4 February) on how to save the world form self-destruction. The leaders, Presidents Luis Echeverria of Mexico and Leopold Sengher of Senegal, and Prime Ministers Olof Palme of Sweden, Pierre Elliott Trudeau of Canada, Joop den Uyl of the Netherlands and Chancellor Dr. Bruno Kreisky of Austria, acting as host, were taking part as private individuals.

The conference was the first of its kind called by the Club of Rome, a small group of academics and businessmen concerned with the problems of the future. The Club has 90 members from 30 countries, experts in various walks of life. Their aim is to persuade national governments of the dangers inherent in the pursuit of expansion. The participants in the Salzburg meeting said they hoped to generate ideas to help combat problems arising from rapid economic expansion, the population explosion and pollution.

After Monday's session, Canadian Premier Pierre Elliott Trudeau acknowledged that politicians and the public were too involved in short-term issues. He hoped the conference would "create the political will and public knowledge to make it possible to look at long-range problems."
