  • Description

Wrought-iron letters "K G S" on top of gate, against sky, flag in back-ground. This is establishment shot for Karachi Grammar School, the only school which the duke is scheduled to visit on his tour through Pakistan. This school, founded 125 years ago, was at first a Church Mission School for the families of Englishmen working in this part of India (as it was in those days.). The main building is nearly 200 years old, and was used as a barracks for English Tommies in the good old days. Now, while there are still many English and "European" students, the percentage of Pakistani pupils is rising every year. Most of the senior masters, however, are still British, and every effort is made to have the school run on British lines.

shots of cars, cycles, and children leaving, some with parents

shot from street outside school yard, cars, rickshaws, busses and a donkey cart pass by

Entrance to President's house. A small (gardener) waters flowers under direction of his supervisor. The Prince will be a guest of President (General) Ayub Khan during his stay in Karachi, and his car will pass along this driveway. The President, incidentally, has been confined to his bedroom for the past two days with an attack of 'flu.

Workmen cleaning one of the ornamental water fountains on the Presidential lawn, preparatory to installing electric coloured lights and re-filling the fountain in readiness for a reception which will be held here

Wide-angle view of main front of President's house. Note policeman standing with sten gun at left

Same shot from a more acute angle

Wide angle shot of exterior of Royal Suite, southwest corner of the President's house, showing empty flag pole on roof. The apartments behind the wood trellis-work, and open onto a wide verandah

Long shot of President's House, showing "shamiana" (tent-like structure) which has been erected on the lawn as part of the preparations for the Presidential reception. Workmen are busy installing coloured lights in the trees.

    16 and 17.
Typical street traffic in the business section of Karachi; the Duke and will pass this way enroute to the Eleventh Pakistan Science Conference which is being held on the Fire Brigade Sports Ground, adjacent to the temporary home of Karachi University. Our shot shows camel carts, bicycle rickshaws, motor-cycle rickshaws, hand-carts, horse-drawn "victorias", motors, a double-decker bus - all streaming along in hair-raising confusion.

Shot at the "shamiana", erected on the Fire Brigade Ground, where the Pakistan Association for the Advancement of Science are holding the inauguration of the Eleventh Pakistan Science conference, which is the first function the Duke will attend in Pakistan, less than three hours after his plane lands from Delhi. This shot shows a camel cart parked at a side entrance as workers unload costly Oriental rungs, which will be laid on rough carpets (hurries) on the dias and ground surrounding the dias, and will form a strange contrast to the rather shoddy "pandal" which, by the way, is located in a rather "slummy" section of the city.

General view of exterior of shamiana, giving an impression of the size of the structure. Over 5,000 guests have been invited, and so many rickety folding chairs have been provided for their "comfort".

Mr. Whyte's letter of January 14th specifically asked us to cover "preparations in Karachi for the Duke's visit". We have held off shooting to the last possible minute in the hope of finding something good along these lines. However, as he is not coming as the "head of a State", no special arrangements of a spectacular nature - such as triumphal arches in the streets, reviewing stands, and so on - are being made, so we have had to make the best of rather sparse material. Hope we have given you something to work on!
