    IN EAST BERLIN, CEMETERIES NEAR THE WALL, NORMALLY SEALED OFF AS A SECURITY PRECAUTION, WERE OPENED FOR A FEW HOURS TO ALLOW EAST BERLINERS TO TEND RELATIVES' GRAVES.

    VOPOS (BORDER GUARDS) STOOD BY IN CASE ANYONE TRIED TO ESCAPE INTO THE WESTERN SECTOR.TIME TO LEAVE WAS SIGNALLED BY AN ATTENDANT RINGING A BELL.WEST BERLINERS WATCHED FROM THEIR SIDE OF THE WALL AS EAST GERMAN GUARDS SEARCHED THE CEMETERIES TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE HAD LEFT.

    WEST BERLINERS WERE NOT ALLOWED TO CROSS INTO THE EASTERN SECTOR TO TEND GRAVES OF RELATIVES AND FRIENDS BURIED THERE.INSTEAD, THEY LAID WREATHS WHERE THE WALL SEALED OFF THE CEMETERIES.

    IN BONN, THE WEST GERMAN CHANCELLOR, DR LUDWIG ERHARD, PAID TRIBUTE TO "ALL MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN WHO ARE VICTIMS OF THE UNNATURAL DIVISION OF OUR COUNTRY.
