  • Description

Whitemen's magic game to the remote jungle areas of Long-house Ibans in Brunei last week with the installation of the first telephone.

The radio-telephones are powered by the sun in what is a unique experiment in Brunei, and there would be about 50 of these solar-powered telephone.

Solar cells get their power from the sun during the day and charge up batteries at night, giving about two hours of continuous use daily.

The first solar-powered telephone call was from the Belait District officer, Dato Haji Abdullah, to the Mentri Besar in Bandar Seri Begawan.

All the solar phone sets are being linked to other exchanges to give them subscriber truck dialing facilities throughout the state.

Senior Brunei Telecommunications officials who were present at the inaugural ceremony said it took a week to install the service at a cost of ten thousand US dollars.

The system consists of two batteries, a solar cell and a hundred foot mast.

The magic of talking to unseen people far away is considered even more powerful magic than the earlier supply of electricity to those regions.
