VISNEWS filmed June 1 at the Mansion House London, as the Lord Mayor, Sir Harold Gillett launched the United Kingdom appeal for World Refugee Year .... by unveiling a symbolic drawing by Dame Laura Knight of the outstretched hand, against a background of darkness.

A large gathering at the ceremony included leaders of all three Political parties, Premier Macmillan, Hugh Gaitskell, leader of the opposition and vice-patron of the appeal J.Grimond, leader of the Liberal Party.

Sir Harold appealed for two million pounds. It was a cause that transcended the barriers of race, creed, colour and prejudice. "It is the story of the good samaritan multiplied many thousand times". The picture unveiled -- has been chosen as symbol of the year.

The appeal got off to an encouraging financial start with a promise from the Prime Minister that the Government would give another GBP100,000 in addition to the GBP100,000 they pledged last year -- and the announcement that five other donors had subscribed a total of GBP31,000 towards the GBP2m. target.
