  • Description

Eleven airmen died on Wednesday at Cape Town's famous Table Mountain, in the worst multiple aeroplane crash in the south African air force's history.

The aircraft involved in the crash, three Hawker Siddeley 125 twin-jets, ploughed into the steep Devil's Peak area of the mountain, while practising for a fly-past on Monday to mark south Africa's 10th. anniversary of Independence.

Despite the tragedy the fly-past will still take place.

A tight security cordon guarded the wreckage of the aircraft the day after the crash. They were still on the secret list, and the South African air force is understood to have taken delivery of four of the high-speed British-built executive jets during the past year.
