  • Description

A strike by five and a half thousand petrol industry workers in Belgium has now lasted five days. (19 January).

High grade petrol is now almost unobtainable in many parts of the country and most filling stations are operating unofficial rationing.

The Economic Affairs Ministry today ordered petrol stations to close for the weekend in an effort to conserve that fuel there is.

Domestic heating oil..one of the main sources for central heating..has already run out and many schools are expected to remain closed on Monday.

Workers at the Berlaymont building..the six thousand Common Market Eurocrats..got an unexpected half day as the heating system there ran out of fuel.

Meanwhile the oil industry says no progress has been made in finding a solution to the dispute which is over pay and conditions.

SYNOPSIS: Motorists in Belgium can look forward to a stay at home weekend because there's no sign of an end to a week-long strike by workers in the petrol industry. Already high grade petrol is virtually unobtainable in many places...and in others filling stations are operating a voluntary rationing system.

The stoppage which began on Monday, involves five and a half thousand refinery, depot and transport workers, and is over pay and conditions.

The Economic Affairs Ministry has ordered petrol stations to close down for the weekend, and the nation faces a complete lack of domestic fuel oil. Schools may be forced to close on Monday because they'll have no central heating, and for six thousand Common Market workers the strike means time off..the central heating in the massive Berlaymont building was one of the first to run out of fuel.
