Among those at the ceremony was the Kabaka of Buganda - the hereditary ruler of the Uganda province of Buganda, which is recognised as a native kingdom.

After meeting the Apostolic Delegate for East and West Africa, Dr. Kiwanuka entered the cathedral. Then followed Pontifical High Mass and the installation and enthronement, and the showing of the Bull, or official letter of appointment, to the Archdiocesan Councillors.

Dr. Kiwanuka - now invested with the Pallium - afterwards walked in procession to his house.

Before his new appointment, Dr. Kiwanuka was Bishop of Masaka, in Uganda. He was appointed to Masaka in 1939, and at the time of his consecration he was the first African Bishop in Africa.
