  • Description

    VISNEWS filmed a
ceremony in Copenhagen, Feb 12., commemorating an incident of 300 years ago -
Holland's intervention in the 1658-60 Swedish-Danish War, on Denmark's side.

Governors Minister, Danish Swedish and Dutch Ambassador's and police walked in
torchlight procession from Copenhagen city hall to the Stormgade - a street that
saw the hardest fighting - where Danish Interior Minister Olesen unveiled a
plaque to those Dutchmen who died.

The war was caused by Denmark's increasing shipping dues in the channel between
the Swedish mainland and Denmark's most northern isles at the entrance to the
Baltic. The war is famous for King Charles of Sweden's advance from Jutland over
the frozen sea to Danish territory.

Holland, partly afraid of the outcome of the war and unhappy about paying high
dues on its valuable Baltic trade, intervened just as a combined Swedish-German
    army attacked Copenhagen, 1659.

Dutch diplomacy and force brought about a settlement.

VISNEWS also famed paintings, armour and other relics of this war at a recently
    opened exhibition.
