    Major-General Yakubu Gowon, the Nigerian Head of State, attended a parade in Lagos yesterday (1 Oct) marking the Tenth anniversary of the country's Independence.

    Also present at the ceremony were leaders from 11 African countries and they watched a massive marchpast which continued despite bad weather.

    Tanks, armoured cars and artillery followed 3,000 schoolchildren and Army, air force, navy and police units. In a brief speech, General Gowon said that Nigeria was celebrating "not only the return of peace in our country but the triumph of African Unity and solidarity." He also paid tribute to the late President Nasser and the crowd of more than eight thousand observed a two-minute silence in memory of the Egyptian leader.

    Later, in a broadcast to the Nigerian people, General Gowon outlined steps the supreme military council has decided must be taken before Government returns to civilian hands. He set 1976 as the target for a return to normal constitutional rule but added that the military leaders would try to complete their programme earlier.
