  • Description

As a protest against a proposed increase in the tax on petrol, Belgian motorists and motoring organisations - Nov. 21 - staged a one-day strike, lasting until 6 o'clock in the evening, during which no vehicles were to be used except those necessary for essential services.

The strike was intended as a passive protest, but in the centre of Brussels, students tried to block the streets and stop the little traffic which was still moving. Several arrests were made when policy arrived to restore order.

The proposed tax increase would raise the price of petrol by nearly 1 franc per litre, and - following all earlier increase in the tax - this was the last straw for Belgian drivers and transport firms.

Taxis and delivery vans were among the few vehicles still operating in order to continue important public services.
