    Gabon's new Ambassador to Togo, Jose Joseph Amiar, presented his credentials to President Etienne Eyadema in Lome, the capital, on Monday (July 9). Before the ceremony, accompanied by Togo's protocol chief John Gaba, he inspected a guard of honour outside the presidential residence.

    Gabon and half of Togo were once part of French West Africa. Since both countries gained their independence they have kept close cultural and trading ties. The other part of pre-independent Togo was a British colony.

    SYNOPSIS: Gabon's new Ambassador to Togo, Jose Joseph Amiar -- furtherest from camera -- went to the presidential residence in the capital, Lome, on Monday to present his credentials to President Etienne Eyadema. Mr. Amiar, accompanied by Togolese protocol chief John Gaba, inspected a guard of honour on his way inside.

    Gabon and half of Togo were once part of French West Africa. Since they gained their independence, the two countries have maintained close cultural and trading ties.

    At the accreditation ceremony, Mr. Amiar reviewed the ties between the two countries and paid tribute the Togo's progress and its maintenance of friendship with Gabon.

    Accepting the Ambassador's credentials, President Eyadema said it was essential to the development of Africa that its countries maintained friendly relations.
