Background: United States General Alexander Haig paid his first visit on Monday to the West German capital, Bonn since becoming Supreme Allied Commander in Europe.
After being greeted by the West German Defence Minister, Herr George Leber, General Haig reviewed a march-past of troops. He then inspected the guard of honour with Herr Leber and the Chief of the West German armed forces Admiral Zimmermann.
General Haig took command of NATO's European force of more than three-quarters of a million troops last December.
