  • Description

Twelve competing teams marched past the King of Malaysia, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (12 July) in an impressive ceremony opening the 16th Merdeka Soccer tournament. Burma, the defending champions, led the parade followed in alphabetical order by the other competing nations.

The King took the salute of the march-past from the newly-constructed royal box.

After all of the team had marched to the centre of the filed and lined up before the stadium crowd, and King stepped down to be introduced to various team members.

Later in the evening, an enthusiastic 30,000-strong crowd watched Japan's olympic squad beat the Khmer Republic by four goals to one.

Star of the Japanese side was Kamamoto, who scored all four goals for Japan. The Khmer Republic, underdogs in the Merdeka tournament, fought hard in the first half. By half-time neither side had scored. In the second half the Japanese broke the Khmer defence and ended easy winners.
