  • Description

A DUCKING FOR A FULLY-CLOTHED "FREEDOM SWIMMER" AND A NUMBER OF MINOR SCUFFLES MARKED THE LIFTING OF THE BAN ON NON-WHITES AT THE MUNICIPAL CENTRAL SWIMMING POOL, SALISBURY, SOUTHERN RHODESIA, AUGUST 18.

DR. TERENCE RANGER, LEADER OF THE "FREEDOM SWIMMERS" ARRIVED AT THE POOL ACCOMPANIED BY ABOUT 20 WHITE, AFRICAN AND ASIAN MEN. AS DR. RANGER WAS WALKING NEAR THE EDGE OF THE POOL, A YOUTH DARTED FORWARD AND PUSHED HIM IN THE SHALLOW END.

TEMPERS FLARED OVER A POSTER CLAIMING, "DIVIDED WE SINK, UNITED WE SWIM." A POSTER IN REPLY DECLARED: "TRASH. WITH BLACKIES ROUND OUR NECK WE ARE BOUND TO SINK."
A NUMBER OF WHITE MEN AND WOMEN LEFT THE POOL WHEN THE "FREEDOM SWIMMERS" ENTERED THE WATER.

SALISBURY COUNCIL HAD BEEN ADVISED THAT THE RIGHT OF ADMISSION TO THE POOL COULD NOT BE RESERVED.
