  • Description

TWO WOMEN HOSTAGES WERE RESCUED BY POLICE FROM THEIR ARMED CONVICT CAPTORS IN GEORGETOWN, KENTUCKY, TODAY (FRIDAY) AFTER A 300-MILE (480 KM) CAR CHASE INTER-STATE. THE CHASE BEGAN IN CLEVELAND, OHIO, YESTERDAY AFTER THE CONVICTS--ARMED WITH A SHOTGUN, PISTOL AND KNIVES--GRABBED THE WOMEN DURING A PRISON CHURCH SERVICE.

THE WOMEN HAD BEEN ASSISTING IN THE CHAPEL DURING THE SERVICE. THE CONVICTS THREATENED TO KILL THEIR HOSTAGES UNLESS THEY WERE ALLOWED TO ESCAPE IN A POLICE CAR, AND PROVIDED WITH A SHOTGUN AND AMMUNITION.

ONCE THE CONVICTS WERE AWAY FROM THE PRISON, THEIR CAR WAS TAILED BY A PROCESSION OF POLICE CARS AND PRESSMEN. THERE WERE TWO STOPS FOR PETROL, DURING WHICH POLICE OFFICERS PLEADED WITH THE MEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THE TWO WOMEN--MRS. MORENA DELLARIA AND LOUISE HONOR.

THE CHASE, WHICH AT TIMES REACHED 100 M.P.H. (160 K.P.H.), ENDED SEVERAL HOURS LATER IN A MUDDY CENTRE STRIP OF THE MAIN HIGHWAY OUT OF GEORGETOWN. THE CONVICTS--20-YEAR-OLD THOMAS E. THOMAS, JAMES SYKES, 25, AND 19-YEAR-OLD DAVID CARPENTER--GAVE THEMSELVES UP WITHOUT ANY VIOLENCE.

THE LADIES WERE FRIGHTENED, BUT OTHERWISE UNHARMED. ONE SPOKE BRIEFLY OF HER CONVERSATION WITH ONE OF THE CONVICTS:
