  • Description

THIS WEEKEND, BRITAIN FACES ONE OF THE BIGGEST INDUSTRIAL SLOW-DOWNS SINCE THE GENERAL STRIKE OF 1926 - AS POSTMEN THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY THREATEN A TOTAL STOPPAGE "UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE." THE POSTMEN'S DISPUTE ARISES FROM THEIR REJECTION OF A FOUR PERCENT, OR NINE SHILLINGS AND SIXPENCE A WEEK RISE. THE UNION SAYS IT WANTS AT LEST TEN AND A HALF PERCENT.

TO PRESS THEIR CLAIM, THE POSTMEN HAVE BANNED OVERTIME, AND IN SORTING OFFICES IN LONDON IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT THERE ARE MORE THAN 35 MILLION LETTERS AWAITING DELIVERY.

DELAYS IN THE POSTAL SERVICE ARE NOW MORE THAN FIVE DAYS, AND IN CENTRAL LONDON TODAY (THURSDAY) IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT NO MORE LETTERS WOULD BE ACCEPTED "FOR AN INDEFINITE PERIOD." THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT THE LONDON POSTAL DISTRICT HAS HAD TO SUSPEND COLLECTIONS IN THIS WAY.

IN AN EFFORT TO AVERT THE STRIKE, THE CABINET MET DURING THE DAY. MR. RON SMITH, UNION LEADER OF THE COUNTRY'S 120, 000 POSTMEN, HAD TALKS WITH MR. REGINALD MAUDLING, THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER. LATER HE SAID THE PROPOSALS PUT FORWARD BY THE CHANCELLOR WOULD BE DISCUSSED BY THE EXECUTIVE OF THE UNION ON FRIDAY.
