    The crowd shot as outside the ground were taken at half past nine in the morning, two hours before play was due to begin. It was raining heavily.

    Benaud and Macdonald had an unofficial look at the wicket at about eleven o'clock and were driven off by a sudden heavy shower. The covers were removed and then at a quarter to two, May and Benaud inspected the wicket.

    A second inspection took place at a quarter to three and a third at a quarter to four. Play started at a quarter past four.
