  • Description

ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO THIS WEEK AN EVENT TOOK PLACE WHICH CAPPED THE DAZZLING GROWTH OF A COMPANY WHOSE NAME BECAME SYNONYMOUS WITH "WILD WEST." ON NOVEMBER 1, 1866, A "GRAND CONSOLIDATION" OF WELLS FARGO'S MANY STAGE LINES WITH THE OVERLAND MAIL RESULTED IN THE LARGEST STAGECOACH OPERATION THE WORLD HAD EVER KNOWN.

THE DATE MARKED THE INTEGRATION OF ALL THE MAJOR TRANSCONTINENTAL RUNS - INCLUDING THE FAMED OVERLAND - UNDER THE OWNERSHIP AND OPERATION OF WELLS FARGO AND COMPANY. THE FIRM HAD BEEN FOUNDED 14 YEARS EARLIER BY EASTERNERS HENRY WELLS AND WILLIAM FARGO.

THE FASTEST WAY FOR A TRAVELLER TO REACH CALIFORNIA OVERLAND WAS BY STAGECOACH - AND IN 1866 IT TOOK ABOUT 21 DAYS FROM ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI, TO SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.

THE WELLS FARGO COACHES WERE PULLED BY A TEAM OF SIX HORSES AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 10 MILES PER HOUR. THERE WAS A STOP EVERY 20 - 25 MILES AND A NEW TEAM OF HORSES WERE IN THE HARNESS IN FOUR MINUTES.

IN CALIFORNIA'S MINING TOWNS THERE WERE NUMEROUS STAGESTOPS. IN THE COLD COUNTRY WELLS FARGO HAD HUNDREDS OF BANKING AND EXPRESS OFFICES WHERE MINERS WEIGHED THEIR GOLD, MADE DEPOSITS, OR HAD BULLION TRANSPORTED TO SAN FRANCISCO. WITH THE CONSOLIDATION OF STAGECOACH LINES IN 1866, WELLS FARGO WAS IN BUSINESS ON A GRAND SCALE, HOLDING SWAY OVER WHAT AT THE TIME WAS A TRANSPORT MONOPOLY.
