  • Description

Saturday (September 30th), sees the official opening of the longest bridge in Europe. The Oland bridge spans 6638 yards (6070 metres) between the Swedish mainland, near Kalmar, and the Baltic island of Oland. This pre-opening film was shot on Wednesday (Sept. 27).

The opening ceremony will be performed by Crown Prince Carl Gustaf -- five years after work first started on the 10 million pound (24-million dollar) project. The concrete girder bridge has 155 spans. Special platforms were invented to help in the construction -- devices which lifted the floating work-area clear out of the water when necessary, to allow work to continue even in heavy seas. The entire project was completed with an average labour force of 100.

SYNOPSIS: Europe's longest bridge comes into ???rvic??? after five years of building. It's nearly four miles long, and it connects the Swedish mainland with the island of Oland.

There are a hundred and fifty-five spans in the entire construction. It's made up of concrete girders -- and two special floating concrete plants were used in its construction. The constructors also developed their own special invention to make the building easier. It was a special platform. Normally it is at water level, with four special l???g??? fi???mly placed on the ???b???d. In bad weather the platform could be lifted clear of the water, so that work could go on -- even in heavy seas. The bridge has cost ten million pounds.
