    THE CONTROVERSIAL ANGLICAN ARCHBISHOP OF CAPE TOWN, THE MOST REVEREND JOOST DE BLANK, HAS LEFT SOUTH AFRICA FOR ENGLAND. THE 54 YEAR OLD CLERIC, AND A POWERFUL CRITIC OF APARTHEID, RESIGNED LATE LAST YEAR BECAUSE OF ILL-HEALTH.

    A FORMER ARCHBISHOP OF STEPNEY, DR. DE BLANK, HAS BEEN IN SOUTH AFRICA FOR THE PAST SIX YEARS. IN THAT TIME HE GAINED NOTORIETY FOR HIS STAND AGAINST APARTHEID AND FREQUENTLY CAME INTO CONFLICT WITH THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT.

    IT WAS ANNOUNCED LAST OCTOBER FROM 10 DOWNING STREET THAT ARCHBISHOP DE BLANK WOULD BE APPOINTED ONE OF THE FOUR CANONS OF WESTMINSTER. THE APPOINTMENTS ARE MADE BY THE QUEEN, ON THE ADVICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER.

    THE APPOINTMENT OF A NEW ARCHBISHOP OF CAPE TOWN IS A MATTER NOW FOR THE CHURCH OF SOUTH AFRICA; AND HE WILL BE NOMINATED BY THE ELECTED ASSEMBLY OF THE DOICESE OF CAPE TOWN WITH THE APPROVAL OF THE PROVINCIAL BISHOPS.
