Background: John Newcombe won the Men's Singles final in the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships on Saturday (July 4) beating fellow Australian Ken Rosewall in five sets.

It was the second time 26 year-old Newcombe has won the title; he won the last all-amateur Wembledon in 1967 this time he wins GBP 3000 sterling.

Newcombe beat 35-year old Ken Rosewall 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in two hours and 43 minutes. It was the first final to go to five sets for 21 years. Newcombe not only had to beat one of the world's most experienced players but also had to overcome the unnerving effects of a partisan-but fair-crowd. It was clear that the 15,000 spectators hoped to see Rosewall win the one major title which has eluded him his brilliant career.

This was Rosewall's third final, he lost in 1954 and 1956 before turning professional in 1957. He looked beaten when trailing 1-3 in the fourth set but somehow he managed to raise his spirit and find new reserves of stamina to take the set 6-3. But the powerful serving of Newcombe finally won the day and he took the deciding set quite comfortably 6-1.

Princess Margeret made the presentations as the crowd cheered the two players.
